Murray Grey Newsbrief

December 2006

Presidents Message

Dairy Index

Dairy Index The council is waiting on information from ABRI with regard to the establishment of a Dairy Index for Murray Grey’s. .A base of weighting has been agreed and we need to see the impact this has to be confident that the Index is working as required. The cost of establishing and maintaining the index is also needed.

Recording of Gene Testing.

PBB and ABRI have been asked to supply costing for providing gene testing results within the Breedplan recording system. This would provide members with information on line on individual animals which have been tested (this would currently only be available for the Calpain 1 Tenderness gene).

Promotion

Barry Macdonald is planning to produce a promotional DVD for Murray Greys. The focus of the promotion is Murray Greys in the commercial environment. Members who consider they have suitable video footage should send it directly to Barry at Winton. I would like to thank all those members who have participated in showing, fieldays and other promotional activities over the past 12 months. Keeping the breed in front of the farming public is extremely important in progressing the breed.

2007 AGM

It is planned to have the 2007 AGM in Palmerston North on Tuesday the 15th May in conjunction with the Beef Expo. The AGM meeting will be held at 5pm followed by the Annual Society a dinner at 7pm.

Beef Expo 2007

There are 3 breeders who have expressed an interest in entering 4 bulls at the National Sale at Beef Expo. The bulls will be inspected by the Society’s inspector prior to the Sale on farm. The bulls are required to meet the health standards set by Beef Expo which include; TB freedom, BVD Vaccinated (x2), BVD Antigen Negative The sale gives Murray Grey breeders an opportunity that has not been available for sometime, that is to see bulls of quality from several well known studs side by side. All bulls are performance recorded helping members to evaluate the merits of the individual animals. As Christmas has suddenly arrived I would like to take this opportunity to wish members and fellow councillors a great Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

MEAT & WOOL NZ BEEF EXPO PROGRAMME 2007

14th – 16th May 2007 Arena Manawatu, Palmerston North

The full programme can be viewed on this page.

HEALTHY RIVALRY AT THE 1st FUTURE BEEF NZ STEER HOOF & HOOK COMPETITION

Will it be a Simmental, Angus, Hereford, South Devon, Charolais or a cross bred steer to take out the title of Grand Champion at the first Hoof and Hook Competition to be held at the Meat and Wool Beef Expo? This seems to be the question on the tip of everyone’s tongue that has heard about the new steer competition. The first Future Beef NZ (FBNZ) Steer Hoof and Hook competition will be held on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th May 2007 at Arena Manawatu, Palmerston North. The program will be linked in closely with the Beef Expo with the winners being announced at the Steak of Origin Gala dinner and at the PGG Wrightson Champion of Champions. General Manager of NZPBB, Murray Meads believes “The Future Beef Hoof and Hook competition will be an exciting start to the 2007 Beef Expo. Involving a youth activity at expo which is commercially focused, adds to the flavour of the event”. The proposed program will ensure that there is a good balance between competition, education, fun activities and time to work with the steers. Steers and competitors will arrive at Arena Manawatu at 12 noon and the draft program for the show is outlined below.

The steers will be processed at the LAND MEATS NZ plant at Wanganui and the carcass judging will be completed on Tuesday morning so that the results are ready to be announced at the PGG Wrightson Champion of Champions on Wednesday. Cattle breeders are encouraged to go in search of their best steer and then find a young and enthusiastic person to teach it to lead, groom it and then take it to the show to contest what will be a prestigious title. The competition is set to be a huge success with outstanding support from breed societies. Information will continue to be circulated early in the New Year, however if you have any questions or would like to be involved in the competition please don’t hesitate to contact NZPBB.

New FBNZ Coordinator Appointed

FBNZ is pleased to announce the appointment of its fresh new coordinator Brooke Mullooly. Brooke has extensive experience in the beef industry and we feel confident that she will extend her passion for our industry into the FBNZ concept. Brooke is looking forward to her new position and is excited about the huge opportunities that exist for the program. She has grown up on a property and has extensive experience and knowledge of the beef industry. She has shown cattle and was the recipient of the NZ Angus Summitcrest scholarship. “I am looking forward to being able to give young people interested in the beef industry opportunities to further their knowledge and skills, and work towards ensuring that our industry is maintained for many generations to come.” Brooke will commence at NZPBB on Monday 11th December and if you have any queries she will be only too happy to assist you.

  Breedplan

Performance recording on Breedplan

With the contracts now in place there are no additional charges for those members recording on Breedplan. Previously each recorded dam cost an extra $6.00 which was charged to members directly by ABRI.
Now full members pay $17.50 per dam whether they performance record
on Breedplan or not.

Herd book

The possibility of producing a Herd book by printing the information directly off Internet Solutions has been investigated. This unfortunately shows that to do this would cost $283 just for the paper to print off one run.
Specific software is available to produce a Herd book and the production of a Herd book will again be reviewed in 2008 when Breedplan will change to a windows based operating system.
Members can of course print off any information they want from Internet Solutions at any time.
If you don’t have a computer but would like to access the information contact a friend who does have internet access and can show you the ropes.

Progress magazine

Members can obtain additional copies of Progress at no charge, for promotional purposes. Contact Lindy Lawrence at Performance Beef Breeders if you wish to receive additional copies. A single page promotional pamphlet is also available from PBB for handouts at Shows, Field days etc.

Advertising

The Council has decided not to advertise in Dairy publications this season. This decision was taken following feed back indicating that the majority of bulls were already sold or spoken for.

Dairy Index

The setting up of a Dairy Index for Murray Grey bulls is being considered by the council.
Indexes can be established based on the EBV’s of individual bulls and the commercial use to which they are to be used.
The use of indexes has the advantage of providing a single dollar figure for an individual bull for a particular purpose. A dairy index is being considered first as this is the major market for Murray Grey bulls in New Zealand.
While providing a dollar figure value for customers it also provides a simple tool for breeders wishing to focus on the dairy market.
A trial run with known bulls on agreed standards will be done along with a costing to evaluate the index.
