Presentation of Honorary Life and Life Memberships At the 2008 Murray Grey Annual General Meeting held in Palmerston North Joyce Gray was awarded Honorary Life Membership to the Society and Trevor Beer was awarded Life Membership. Citations were given as follows:
Joyce Gray Honorary Life Membership.
It is with a great deal of pleasure that I have been asked to speak on the Honorary Life Membership of Joyce Gray.
Bill & Joyce started Marire Murray Grey stud in 1974 purchasing a number of approved Angus or base stock. Thereafter they bought a number of pure bred females from many studs throughout the country.
From 1978 Bill & Joyce used Newhaven Park Barclay quite extensively and he was followed by another successful sire in Willakooka Jumbo. At shows and sales Joyce would always be seen washing and cleaning tails prior to an animals entrance into the ring.
In 1981, Bill was elected to the NZ Murray Grey Council and took up the position of Treasurer in 1984. This was the start of many trips to Palmerston North for Joyce.
In 1975 the Waikato Murray Grey Breeders Club was formed and Bill and Joyce have been active members of this club with Joyce in charge of social activities, catering and on-going requirements at our Fieldays site at Mystery Creek in Hamilton.
Arguably the most successful sire bred by Bill & Joyce Gray would be Marire Destiny 707 sold to the Hayward family in 1989 for $13,000. In 1990 the Australian Murray Grey Society held the second World Congress at Aubrey/ Wadonga.
Bill & Joyce attended this along with other New Zealanders where an enjoy- able time was had by all. With Bill being elected President of the NZ Murray Grey Society in 1992 Joyces support was needed more than ever.
The culmination of Bills tenure as President came in 1994 when NZ hosted the third World Congress and long with this the World Presidency. The work load for Joyce during this congress was huge.
It included a herd tour of Marire Stud and a marquee lunch for over 200 people. During this period the Grays ran a Bull trial for members and Joyce always before or after these happy social occasions.
In conclusion, during the past few years Joyce has continued her association with the Waikato Club and currently holds the posi- tion of Patron.
